A new large-scale project was formally announced in 2020 with the goal of connecting all of Central Ohio’s major waterways and trails together into a cohesive system for residents and visitors. This project known as RAPID 5 is being spearheaded by local leadership at the Urban Land Institute of Columbus, MetroParks, MORPC, Franklin County and others. The project will connect all major parks and waterways in Central Ohio. The five water ways that would be connected are Big Walnut, Alum, Olentangy, Scioto and Big Darby.
The project will ensure that all residents are connected to the waterway system while creating our communities around our natural resources. It will also ensure that parks, greenways and waterways are located within a mile and half of every Franklin County resident. The RAPID 5 project will help improve the health and wellness of community members. It will create healthy recreation and transportation opportunities by providing people of all ages with attractive, safe and accessible place to cycle, walk, hike, jog or skate. It will also help people of all ages incorporate exercise into their daily routines by connecting them with places they want or need to go. The project will also impact the community economically as businesses like communities with parks and greenways. The parks and greenways will further provide opportunities for protecting plant and animal species as well as improving the air quality.
