Floodplain Management

Flood Rezoning

Over the past three years, the City of Whitehall, the City’s engineer (EMH&T), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), our congressional representatives, and others have been working on a project that would result in a reduction in the number of properties located in the 100 year flood hazard area.

On July 19, 2010, FEMA issued a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) that affected the Mason Run and Turkey Run areas of Whitehall and Columbus. As a result, hundreds of property owners will see relief from the financial burden of flood insurance. This revision may also have an impact for floodplain management purposes as well as flood insurance policies and renewals issued in Whitehall.

While the majority of the affected properties have been removed from the 100 year flood hazard area, there are a small number of properties that have been added.

Insurance

As a result of the LOMR, property owners who have been removed may no longer be required to possess a flood insurance policy for this property. However, owners of properties that have been added, may be required to possess a flood insurance policy for that property. That requirement is contingent upon a determination of the banking or mortgage institution where your loan or mortgage is held. Neither the City or FEMA will contact lenders to inform them of this change. Property owners are advised to contact the institution where their loan or mortgage is financed for clarification.
